PasSafe

PasSafe is a desktop tool designed to provide a single secure location for the storage of passwords and other information such as serial numbers and account numbers.

"Four character passwords made up of single-case letters instead of numbers offer only 457,000 variations, these can be broken in minutes using password-cracking tools that can be easily found online. Seven character passwords that combine numbers with letters have trillions of variations and can take over a month to crack."
A book by KPMG consultants, "Security Transformation: Digital Defence Strategies to Protect Your Company.s Reputation and Market Share"
"Passwords should be at least 6 characters. A good password is difficult to guess. It contains alpha, numeric and shift characters. It cannot be found in a dictionary. Do not use any part or any form of a word easily identified with you including your name, user id, birthday, address or phone number. Change passwords often, at least every 3 months."
University of Florida, Basic Security Guidelines for Network Administrators

Features at a Glance

  • Totally Secure - PasSafe uses an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) block cipher. AES is the proposed replacement algorithm for DES. If a computer were capable of cracking a DES key in 1 second that same computer would not be able to crack an AES key for 149 trillion years.
(National Institute of Standards and Technology web site http://csrc.nist.gov/encryption/aes/rijindeal/)

  • Profiles - PasSafe allows unlimited number of profiles for the storage of passwords etc. Each profile has its own security access. Domestic users can have different profiles for family members and corporate users can create different profiles for departments in the organisation such as the Sales Dept, Finance Dept. The corporate version allows multi user access to the same profile.

  • Security Access - Access to each profile is via:
    • User Id
    • Password
    • PIN

or any combination of the 3. If you forget this information you can also setup up to 3 questions and answers known only to yourself. An important security feature of PasSafe is that if you don't use PasSafe for 5 minutes it will close the current profile and minimise itself to the task bar, further preventing any unauthorised access. Automatic password generation - This feature is ideal for corporate users who have to regularly change their system password. PasSafe will randomly create a 7 character password of numeric and upper and lower case alpha characters. The use of such a password creates trillions of variations thus making it extremely difficult for hackers.

  • Show Password - Tired of writing your account code and password (assuming you can find it that is) so that you can enter it into the web site you want to visit? The Show Password function will open a small window which will always sit on top of any other open applications. If you have entered a web site or email address this information will display. To automatically launch your browser and go to the web site or send an email just click on the address in the this window. There is also a copy button which will automatically enter the password and account id info into the web site. For maximum security the window will automatically close after 1 minute if you don't close it first.

  • Categories - For greater ease of use passwords etc. can be grouped by categories. Passwords can then be displayed by the category filter. You can also sort the display on any of the fields such as account name, account code, expiry date etc.

  • Expiry Date - If you have entered expiry dates for your credit cards or in fact any other entry, then each time you run PasSafe a message will display to alert you to those entries that the date expires within 7 days. They will also be highlighted in red. This message will continue to display until you have changed the expiry date.

  • Off Site Storage - Antares offers an off site storage facility for your sensitive information in the event of theft of your computer or inability to restore from backup in the instance of a system crash.

  • On Line Help - PasSafe has full online help and hardcopy manual.

  • Support - There is a technical help desk which can be emailed at any time.
